Jocelyn, violin

Jocelyn started learning the violin at the age of 4, and studied under the tutelage of violin veteran Kong Guang Tian, SSO (Singapore Symphony Orchestra) violinists Kong Zhao Hui, Andrea Oey, Margit Saur and Foo Say Ming. Jocelyn acquired the ABRSM Violin Grade 8 with Distinction in 2011. As a graduate of School Of The Arts with an International Baccalaureate Diploma, she is currently studying in the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts majoring in Orchestra studies.

Jocelyn’s involvement in Singapore’s music scene includes The Philharmonic Orchestra, re:mix, SOTA String Ensemble, NAFA Orchestra, NAFA Project Strings, NAFA New Music Ensemble, Kid’s Philharmonic@SG and Orchestra of Music Makers. Being widely involved in these organisations, Jocelyn is exposed to a wide range of music genres and repertoire. At the age of 10, she was featured as a solo violinist for “Miss Singapore Chinatown 2005/2006” playing a Chinese classic <<渔舟唱晚>> (The Fisherman’s Song).

In the School Of The Arts (SOTA), Jocelyn led a quartet and performed in various major events such as the MICA Arts Awards 2009 held at the Istana; a private visit by Singapore Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Long to the school; as well as at various lunchtime concerts. In 2010, Jocelyn was the only violinist chosen for an exchange in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 2011, she won an audition to embark on a tour to Switzerland and Italy as a soloist performing the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto and Biber Passacaglia and as a chamber musician. In the following year, she won an audition as a concerto soloist playing Mozart’s Violin Concerto in G Major in the School Of The Arts Concert Hall accompanied by an orchestra.

In the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Jocelyn was Singapore’s first recipient of the “NAFA for SOTA Student Scholarship”, which resulted in a feature on Singapore’s Chinese newspaper Lianhe Zaobao. In her first year of study, she was appointed the 2nd violin principal in two concerts, Strauss and Dvorak and Magnificat, which debuted the NAFA Orchestra at the Victoria Concert Hall. In the latter concert, it yielded reviews such as “The performance was a delightful one” and “very well-characterised”. She was also recommended by renowned conductor Maestro Lim Yau to participate in an external orchestra The Philharmonic Orchestra and by Mr Foo Say Ming to participate in re:mix.

Other than performing, Jocelyn also teaches privately and in two music schools, with students ranging from 3 to 30+ years old.
