May Loh Qiao Qian started learning the viola at the age of 13. Just a year later, she was invited to perform for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music High Scorers’ Concert. During her younger days, she was appointed as principal player of the 2009 Music Elective Programme Combined Schools Orchestra, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls School String Orchestra and the National Junior College String Ensemble.
An active performer, May continues to play regularly with numerous orchestras including the Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO), The Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO), the Orchestra of the Music Makers (OMM) and the Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO). She has performed under the baton of many conductors including Lim Yau, Darrell Ang, Lim Soon Lee, Chan Tze Law, Jason Lai, Yordan Kamdzhalov and Richard Chester amongst many others.
As a guest player with the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra, May has participated in numerous projects including the Royal Concert at the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, where she was the principal player. Other overseas performances she has done include the Young Euro Classic Festival in 2012 with the SNYO in Berlin, Germany.
May is also actively involved in chamber music. She has played under the T’ang Quartet’s The Ensemble Dimension Project: Highly Strung, where she had the opportunity to perform alongside members of the T’ang Quartet. She also participates in chamber music-making with members of the SNYO.
May is currently under the tutelage of T’ang Quartet violist Lionel Tan. Previous teachers she has worked with include Lim Chun, violist of the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana and Tan Wee Hsin, violist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.
