Christoven Tan is a graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. During his years of study, he served as principal violist and led the Academy Orchestra tour to Germany. He was also a member of the Syzygy Quartet and the SAF Music and Drama Company. An active musician in the local music scene; Christoven has played for opera productions (Singapore Lyric Opera), with The Philharmonic Orchestra, re: mix (Offshoots, Slow and Celluloid Concertos) and The Chamber Players. As chamber musician and recitalist, he has collaborated with local musicians including pianist Low Shao Ying, the Artsylum Quartet, guitarist Andrew Lim and local composers Goh Toh Chai and Alicia Joyce de Silva. Christoven is also an active participant at summer music festivals, having attended the Meadowmount School of Music, the Bötersheim Festival and the Interlochen Viola Institute. His teachers include Mr. Jiri Heger, Michelle Li Min Zhe, Volker Hartung, Heidi Castleman, Jutta Puchammer, David Holland, Daniel Sweeney, Becca Albers and Patricia McCarty. Christoven has also taken masterclasses with the Quartetto di Roma.
In recent years, Christoven has been an active supporter of modern viola and chamber works, such as his involvement in an improvisatory project with Arts Fission, a modern dance company. In 2009, Christoven played with re: mix for The President’s Command performance, which was a collaboration with famous local pop composer and arranger Iskandar Ismail.
Christoven has given solo recitals both abroad and locally. His upcoming recital in the final quarter of 2011 will feature works of Hindemith, Ernest Bloch and Goh Toh Chai.
