Cellist Brandon Voo graduated with a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the class of Nella Hunkins, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore in 2008. He furthered his musical education in chamber music playing at the 46th Summer Music Academy at the Académie de Musique Tibor Varga in Sion, Switzerland and alternative string playing at the New Directions Cello Festival 2013 at Ithaca College in the United States.
At age 11, Brandon joined the Singapore Youth Orchestra (SYO) and was an active member of the orchestra for 8 years. He was principal cellist with the SYO from 1996-1997 and performed Haydn’s Cello Concerto No.1 in C Major with the orchestra in 1996. His cello teachers then included Koo Chiang, Hermina Ilano, Liu Peng, Wang Xiaolan and Ding Xiaofeng. Brandon was also selected by the Asian Youth Orchestra in 2003, and served his National Service with the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company from 1998-2000.
Brandon is a veteran with the orchestral scene in Singapore, and has performed with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Festival Orchestra and the Singapore Lyric Opera. Since 2013, Brandon has been a cellist with the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra (MFO). Performances with the MFO include; ‘Yale-Singapore Gala Concert’ at the Esplanade Concert Hall; ‘Kitaro World Symphony’ and ‘Star Wars and Beyond’ at the Marina Bay Sands Theatre; ‘The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers’ at the Star Theatre; ‘Sing50’ at the Singapore National Stadium and ‘National Violin and Piano Competition 2015’ at the Victoria Concert Hall.
Besides orchestral playing, Brandon has performed as a soloist and chamber musician. His solo recital ‘Asian Arpeggione and Romantic Rachmaninov’ at The Arts House and chamber recital ‘Schubert: The Piano Trios’ at the Esplanade Recital Studio were completely sold out. Brandon also frequently crosses over to the genre of pop. His experience as a backup musician include shows with singing sensations like Sarah Brightman, Peter Cetera, Sophia Chang, Jacky Cheung, David Foster, Jerry Huang, Katherine Jenkins, One-Fang, and Russell Watson.
With over a decade of teaching experience, Brandon is very much in demand as a private cello tutor amongst both Singaporeans as well as the expatriate community, which includes nationals of Australia, Belgium, Colombia, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, People’s Republic of China, and the United States of America. Many of his students who started cello lessons with him as a child continue playing cello well into their adulthood, joining alumni school orchestras or community orchestras. His students develop their own creativity, expression and passion as musicians, are able to play music that they enjoy, and are conversant with a wide variety of different musical styles, such as classical, pop and ethnic.
Brandon has also taught cello to many award-winning school orchestras in Singapore, and is currently the cello tutor at the German European School Singapore as well as the Nanyang Primary String Ensemble.
