Benjamin, Viola / Violin

benjaminBenjamin graduated with honours from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore under a full scholarship, where he studied under Associate Professor Zhang Manchin, principal violist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. He also studied violin with Mr. Cheung Wai Lap, violinist from the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Benjamin obtained his associate degree of music from the Hong Kong Baptist University, studying under Dr. Kam Ho Pang (Doctor of Musical Arts, University of Michigan School of Music). Benjamin has taken masterclasses with many international artists including Paul Silverthorne, Yizhak Schotten, Shmuel Ashkenasi , David Erlich, David Takeno, Agathe Blondel, Jean-Philippe Vasseur, Leung Kin Fung, William Coleman, Wang Shaowu and Jay Liu.

Benjamin is an avid chamber musician. In 2013, Benjamin was part of the Duomo Quartet, a semi-finalist at the Asia Pacific Chamber Competition 2013 held in Melbourne. Their performance was broadcasted on the Australian Broadcast Channel. In 2015, he was selected to represent the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music to attend the 2nd Summit of the Pacific Alliance of Music Schools in Beijing, and performed a sextet with international violinist Qian Zhou and violist Professor Su Zhen. In 2012, he was selected to perform the Borodin sextet with the T’ang Quartet. In the same year, he participated in the Ameropa Chamber Festival held in Prague, where he studied with David Erlich. His quartet was selected by the conservatory to participate in the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique (2012) in Saintes, France, where he worked with Philipe Herreweghe. In 2013, he performed as part of a quartet with flutist Jose-Daniel Castellon. To-date, Benjamin has been coached by international chamber artists such as the Shanghai Quartet, Australian String Quartet, Manfred Quartet, La Bande de La Loingtaine and Gábor Takács-Nagy. He is now a member of the Vetta Quartet with which he performs for many events in Singapore.

An active orchestral player, Benjamin has played under the baton of Eiji Oue, Philipe Herreweghe Mark Wigglesworth, Robert Spano, Tan Dun, Jason Lai, Chan Tze Law, and many other great conductors. He was the principal violist of the Hong Kong Baptist University Orchestra, Collegium Musicum Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Youth Strings. He was also invited to play with the Asian Youth Orchestra in their concert in Hong Kong. His performances with local orchestras include the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra, The Philharmonic Orchestra and re:mix. He was principal violist of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra, and was selected to be part of a collaboration concert with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2012 and 2014. Benjamin is now performing with the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra and Singapore Lyric Orchestra.

As a soloist, Benjamin has performed in the Hong Kong City Hall with the Collegium Musicum Hong Kong. He has also given solo recitals in the conservatory. Besides classical music, Benjamin is experienced in other styles and genres. He recorded a pop song with Mag Lam (林欣彤) in her song 我愿留下. He has played for concerts with pop singers such as Denise Ho (何韻詩), Jade Kwan (關心研), Elisa Chan (陳潔靈), Johnny Yip (葉振棠), and Frances Yip (葉麗儀); and jazz singer Laura Fygi. In 2011, he was invited by Cartier to perform for its jewellery show in Taipei. In 2014, he travelled with the W!LD RICE theatre to perform the play “The Importance of Being Earnest” in Macau. In 2015 he performed with English National Ballet.

As a music educator, Benjamin was appointed as a leader-mentor for the Singapore National Youth Orchestra in the Lanxess-SNYO Classic Concert in 2014. He took pedagogy class with Dr. Lee Pei Ming when he was in the conservatory, and has conducted music activities with students of the School of the Arts, Singapore. He has also played for music appreciation performances in many public schools in Singapore. In Hong Kong, he taught group lessons in primary schools that include the SKH Tak Tin Lee Shiu Keung Primary School and Alliance Primary School, Whampoa. He has over ten years of experience in private teaching and at music schools. He currently teaches at the Anglo-Chinese School (International).
